We miss you Dolly!
She was born on January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, as one of 12 children in a poor but musical family. Her parents, Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Owens Parton, encouraged music at home, and Dolly began performing and writing songs as a child.
At age 13, she made her first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. After graduating high school, she moved to Nashville in 1964 and initially found success as a songwriter. Her compositions “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You” later became major hits. She recorded “I Will Always Love You” herself in 1973; Whitney Houston’s 1992 version made it internationally famous.
Parton’s breakthrough as a performer came through her partnership with country singer Porter Wagoner on The Porter Wagoner Show. Their musical collaboration made her a national star, although she eventually pursued a successful solo career. Her best-known songs include:
“Jolene”
“Coat of Many Colors”
“9 to 5”
“Here You Come Again”
“Islands in the Stream”
“Why’d You Come in Here Lookin’ Like That?”
“I Will Always Love You”
She also became a successful actress, appearing in films such as 9 to 5 (1980), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Rhinestone (1984), Steel Magnolias (1989), and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993). Her song “9 to 5” earned her an Academy Award nomination, making her one of the first country artists to receive that recognition for a film song.
In 1986, Parton founded Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. She also established the Dollywood Foundation, which created the Imagination Library program. The program provides free books to young children and has distributed hundreds of millions of books internationally.
Parton is known for her business success, distinctive style, humor, and charitable work. She has received numerous honors, including induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She has also won multiple Grammy Awards and other major music-industry honors.
Dolly Parton is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in country music. Her legacy combines songwriting, entertainment, entrepreneurship, and literacy advocacy.
